Totally agree with you Kate, and appreciate the caveats and internal guardrails included. I’ve also felt like the “boundaries” culture can hinder growth and career development (in addition to your experience hitting very close to home 😉). Definitely at a different stage of life now but really benefited from taking a lot on earlier. Great piece!

Kimie!! You remember the Well+Good days :) I certainly don't have the same energy for work as I had 10 years ago, but I'm so glad I gave it everything when I did. I'm also curious how younger me would have reacted to today's "boundaries" discourse on social media...

Ah great point! I’m not sure but I still think I would have done the same, even with the current discourse. I feel like you almost have to have the “yes to everything” approach at that age, and then you kind of earn the right to set boundaries with the knowledge and better judgment that comes with more experience. Interesting to think about and love hearing about your experiences!

Love this perspective. I also began my career in marketing as one of the first hires at a startup. Saying yes and diving in head first has gotten me where am I today. All that to say, balance is key. Your career can’t always be a sprint. I’ve found I’ve naturally ebbed and flowed over the years.

Absolutely — balance looks different at different stages of life. I’ve assumed I’m past my “sprint” phase now, but to your point about ebbs and flows, maybe it will return (hopefully looking different than it did when I was 25).
